portraits in film

I encourage my portrait clients to shoot at least one roll of film during shoots and to make at least one fiber silver gelatin print from the negatives. The gap between film and digital is closing but nothing beats the look and feel of these double weight rich black and white and sepia prints.

Of course, I shoot digital where appropriate and recently I have been adding poloroid borders to some of my clients’ images. I shot all of these in my home studio:
When I shoot in clients’ homes, I recommend making story prints. They are several images printed on one piece of paper. It’s a nice way to capture the place and time.

Fathers Day is Coming Up!

This Mothers Day weekend we shot a bunch of folks from the West Village Parents board at Hudson River Park — this has been the second weekend in the last year that we’ve done a series of mini-shoots with them. Thanks for everyone for participating. Here are some of the shots from this Saturday. (Yes, that’s a naked baby lying on black backdrop in the park!)

Of course, Fathers Day is coming up — contact us at kate@kateburton.com if you’re interested in doing a photo shoot for dad! We offer group discounts, so get your mom’s group together and give us a call!

Here are some shots from a mother’s group who came to the studio today:

Finally: as a Mothers Day gift, I got to photograph two of my favorite (and most reluctant) subjects: my children Minna and Leo (below). These shots were taken in my backyard, which is also where I do many of my shoots with clients.

The new KateBurton.com

My kids: Minna, 8 and Leo, 5 in the Brooklyn studio

Welcome to my new blog, and the new and improved kateburton.com!

I’ll be updating the blog with Kate Burton Photography news, special offers and some of my latest photos. In the regular website, you’ll notice lots of new sections and features.

I’m particularly proud of the new ‘Then and Now’ section, which features shots of some of my favorite photo subjects over the years. It’s such a pleasure for me to look back and see how much these children have changed and how much they have stayed the same. A child’s emerging personality is there from the start, it’s part of my job to look for it. I’m grateful that I have invited back year after year to document the ever changing family life of my clients.

I would also like to thank David Haring who designed my site and Tai Ming Moy who designed my studio facade. I feel very fortunate to know such a talented graphic designer and architect.

Check back when you can!
